Rook's Corner

A four star apartment on Greenwood Avenue Northeast in Poncey-Highland with a full kitchen, laundry and free parking, and a trail at the door. It suits people staying more than a night and travelling with a pet or a car. It does not suit anyone wanting a front desk, a restaurant downstairs or a short walk to a station.

What you get

Rook's Corner lists a full kitchen: oven, microwave, dishwasher, refrigerator and freezer, toaster, coffee, plus a washing machine, iron and board, hairdryer and towels. There is air conditioning, a bathroom and a separate bath, free wifi and internet access, a TV, and non smoking rooms. Parking is free and on site, pets are allowed, and there is a smoke detector and first aid kit. The list is thin on the things a hotel usually provides: no reception, no bar or restaurant, no gym, no desk service, and nothing beyond the apartment itself.

What that adds up to is a self contained flat rather than a serviced hotel, and the difference matters. You shop, you cook, you wash your own clothes, you park your own car. Rook's Corner gives you the space and the equipment to live normally for a week, and the trail at the door puts you straight onto a path out of Poncey-Highland. It is right for someone moving through Atlanta slowly, with a pet, a car and a reason to be in this neighbourhood. It is wrong for a one night stop, for anyone without a car who wants rail, and for anyone who wants their bed made.

Where it puts you

You are in Poncey-Highland, on the east side of town, and the neighbourhood sits between the Clermont and Ponce City Market. The site's own line is that this is the most useful hundred yards in Atlanta if you plan to walk everywhere, and that is the honest summary: a stay here is built around leaving the car parked.

There is no rail, so getting around means the trail and the bus. The trail is at the door, which puts the BeltLine path within reach the moment you step outside, and the bus covers the rest. That combination suits anyone who wants to walk and ride and does not mind missing a train station. It suits a trip spent on foot between the two anchors either side of you, and it does not suit anyone who wants a rail connection or a quiet residential base away from the traffic.
